Privacy policy
Hangar Hobbs, the iPhone app. Effective 4 October 2026.
Hangar Hobbs is a study game for the FAA knowledge tests. This page says what the app collects, why, who can see it, and how to have it deleted. Questions go to hangarhobbs@gmail.com.
The short version
- No email, phone number or password is needed. The app makes an anonymous account the first time it opens.
- We store your pilot name, your settings and your lesson results so your progress, your group and your crewmates work.
- No ads. No tracking across other apps or websites. We do not sell or rent your data, and we do not share it with data brokers.
- We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera.
- You can delete your account at any time, in the app (Settings > Delete my account) or by email.
What the app collects
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| An anonymous account: a random ID made when the app first opens. | To keep your progress and connect you to your group and crewmates. It is not tied to your email or Apple ID. |
| Your pilot name: the first name and last initial you type, or a placeholder such as "Pilot 07" until you do. | Shown to your group and your crewmates. It is the only free text other pilots can see, and it is checked against a list of words that are not allowed. |
| Settings: your test date, time zone, daily goal, the solo switch, the notices switch and the estimated-score switch. | To plan your week and your reminders. Your test date and time zone are never shown to anyone else. |
| Lesson results: for each lesson, the questions asked, whether each was right the first time, when you flew it, and the revs earned. | To keep your progress safe if you change phones, and to run the weekly group and This week. |
| Group and crew: the group you fly in and its weekly progress, your crewmates, your crewmate code, crewmate requests, nods (three preset lines, no free text), big moments (a unit signed off, a track finished, a test passed), blocks and reports. | So the crew features work, and so we can act on a report. |
| Your estimated score, only if you turn on the switch that shares it. | Shown to your crewmates. Turning the switch off deletes the stored score. |
| Knowledge test outcome, if you record that you took the test: pass or fail and, if you give it, the score. | Counted by month without your name, so we can see how pilots do on the real test. A separate record linked to you only stops the same result being counted twice. |
| Question reports: when you report a question, your note, the question, and the app version, build and platform. | To fix the question. |
| Subscription status from Apple, through RevenueCat. | To unlock the Full route. We never see your card or payment details. |
Some things stay on your phone and are never sent: each answer's history used to schedule reviews, your recall, and the app's own settings. Daily reminders are scheduled on the phone itself.
Who can see what
Your crewmates and your group see your name, the percent of your weekly plan you have flown, the units you have signed off, your last big moment, and your estimated test score only if you switch that on.
They never see your test date, your run of days, whether you flew today, your answers, your time zone, when you were last online, or whether you pay.
There is no search, no directory, no chat, no photos and no location. Someone becomes your crewmate only with your code or a request you accept. You can remove or block a crewmate, and report a name, from their card.
Services that handle data for us
- Supabase hosts the account and the database (United States).
- RevenueCat and Apple handle subscriptions. RevenueCat receives your purchase receipts and an anonymous ID.
- Expo delivers app updates. GitHub Pages hosts this site and the 3D scenes the app downloads; like any web server it sees the internet address of the phone that asks.
Each of them handles data only to provide its service to us. None of them uses it to show you ads on our behalf.
How long we keep it, and deleting it
We keep your data while your account exists. Start over in the app clears the progress on your phone and keeps your name and crewmates. Deleting the app removes what is on the phone but not the account on our server.
To delete your account and everything linked to it, open Settings > Delete my account in the app. The account is deleted from our server immediately: your pilot name, settings, lesson results, crewmates, pair, nods, big moments, requests, blocks and reports about you. The app then clears your phone. Two things stay, without your account attached: a report you made about another pilot's name (so we can still review it) and a report you made about a question (so we can still fix it). Scores from weeks that are already finished also stay as anonymous numbers, with no name or account behind them, so other pilots' past results still add up. A Full route subscription is billed by Apple and is not cancelled by deleting the account; cancel it in Settings > your name > Subscriptions on your iPhone.
If you cannot use the app, email hangarhobbs@gmail.com with your pilot name and, if you can, your crewmate code (Crew tab). We delete the account within 30 days and reply when it is done.
You can also ask for a copy of your data, or ask us to correct it, at the same address.
Children
Hangar Hobbs has no objectionable content, but it is made for student pilots and is not directed at children under 13. We do not ask for ages and do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, email us and we will delete the account.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and its date. If a change is significant, the app will say so.
